WPSC - Witwatersrand Pharmacy Students Council

Mandate

The Wits Pharmacy Student Council (WPSC) is a student body that aims to improve the academic and social lives of pharmacy students at Wits University. WPSC hosts many social events throughout the academic year, the highlight of which is the Annual Pharmacy Ball.

WPSC has a “Been there, done that” program that it hosts on an annual basis at the beginning of the year where the students from the previous year give out tips and advice to the students in the current year of study on how to best tackle the coursework. Another responsibility that WPSC has is to represent pharmacy students in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences in this way we ensure the wellbeing of our students is always considered.

The University of the Witwatersrand department of Pharmacy aims to provide exemplary undergraduate, professional, and graduate education in the health professions and natural sciences. Pharmacy is a dynamic, patient-oriented profession committed to fulfilling the health care needs of South Africa and its people. Movement is away from the traditional compounding and dispensing of medicine towards a more professional advisory and primary health care role. Through innovative application of knowledge and skills the pharmacist becomes involved in the healing, serving and education - a substantial contribution to the community of which the Pharmacist is an integral part.

WPSC also has a Mandela day Food drive. WPSC also coordinates and assists in the running of the Trinity Pharmacy (it is a pharmacy operated by students under direct supervision of a responsible pharmacist) which provides free primary health care to the needy. These projects and initiatives brings the focus to giving back to the people through philanthropic work.
